FREDDIE FOX Album : Freddie Fox Label : Foxhole Records Have
you noticed how many new Smooth Jazz guitar albums are out now?
Take our word for it, there's a lot. New releases from most
of the smooth guitar icons, plus a host of newcomers who have
thrown their Fenders and Gibsons into the ring. Formidable among
the new crop are the guitarists who’ve been paying their
dues for years as sidemen and who now deserve their time in
the spotlight. Which brings us to one Freddie Fox… Tennessee
born, Berklee College Of Music educated, So Cal bred (at least
for the past 20 years)… with impressive credentials that
include tours with names you know (Atlantic Starr, Jennifer
Holliday, Vesta Williams, Eric Benet, Sheila E, and his wife,
Evelyn “Champagne” King) and albums from equally
famous folk (Walter Beasley, Warren Hill, Curtis Stigers, Najee,
Michael Lington). None of this would mean a thing, though, if
Freddie’s new self-titled project weren’t such an
outstanding freshman effort. These days it takes something special
to really perk up our ears here in SmoothJazzland. And FREDDIE
FOX delivered just that! Fact is, Mr. Fox gets it! He knows
what works for Smooth Jazz right now. This one’s a slam
dunk, one fashionable track right after the other, from the
lead radio hit, “From The Heart” to the reggae-tinged
“Sensual” and “Johnniea’s Love,”
to the fun retro-disco “My House” with wife Evelyn
on background vocals, to the engaging ballad “Strawberry.”
Solid writing (every track is an FF original) + solid performances
(from Freddie and his all-star guests Gerald Albright, Michael
White, Ronnie Foster, Alex Al, Larry Kimpel, and, of course,
wife Evelyn “Champagne” King.) = a solid album.
We like Freddie’s playing alot. We like FREDDIE FOX alot,
and we think you will too! You can put money on this one…
If this album is any indication, we bet you'll be hearing much
more from Freddie Fox in the future. ~Scott O’Brien***Café

My House - Freddie Fox : Out of Tullahoma, Tennessee comes Mr.
Fox, who for the past eighteen years has travelled the world
touring with many top artists, (including Evelyn "Champagne"
King, who happens to be Mrs. Fox.) Freddie knew at an early
age that music would be his life. He’s been influenced
by many great guitarists such as Benson and Hendrix, and has
also added trumpet, keyboards, and bass guitar to his repertoire.
He studied at the Berklee College of Music for four years and
then later followed that up with private lessons. Definitely
not lacking in musical credentials, Freddie has taken part in
dozens of sessions, done TV and film work, and produces and
writes music as well. Finally, finding the time to record his
own solo project, Freddie’s self-titled debut was released
a short while ago. There's no shortage of great music on this
one, but for this occasion we've chosen My House, an original
composition that was also produced and arranged by Freddie himself.
So it's time to get ready for Freddie, Freddie Fox that is!

Calling Mr. Fox a new-comer or undiscovered would be an egregious
mistake. He has been playing his guitar and touring with big
name artists for almost 20 years. Freddie cites musical influences
from the likes of Eddie Hazel, George Benson, Jimmy Hendrix,
Steve Lukather, Paul Jackson Jr., Michael Laundau, and Dan Huff.
Freddie has played on over 20 albums for artists such as Walter
Beasley, Warren Hill, Rose Royce and Najee to name but a few.
His self-titled debut solo album is sure to make the name Freddie
Fox all that more popular. The album opens with the groovy,
radio-ready tune "From The Heart." This is followed
by the more funky flavor of "Sensual." Freddie's wife
lends her vocal talent to the next song, "My House."
You may have heard of her, Evelyn "Champagne" King.
The album slows down a bit for the engaging ballad "Strawberry"
again with Mrs. King providing the vocal talent. My favorite
track on this album, "Cool," combines the talent of
Mr. Fox's guitar with the distinctive sounds of Gerald Albright's
alto sax and the fabulous downbeat of Larry Kimple's bass guitar.
I have caught Mr. Kimple live several times recently while he
was touring with Boney James and his talents shine through on
this track. The infectious riffs of "Groovin'" bring
out the best in him and his instrument. "Johnniea's Love"
is a beautiful tribute to Freddie's mother-in-law. Not many
guys feel that way enough to say good things about their mother's-in-law,
let alone write a wonderful song for them. Just another example
of the high class feel of this whole album. All in all this
should be the first in a long string of solo efforts from Freddie
Fox and his lyrical guitars. At least, this reviewer is hoping
for more. --Derick Winterberg
